The week before I broke my foot, I resolved to join Weight Watchers and start exercising. Now, I'm still planning to do it, but have a great excuse not to bother with either one right now. And in order to deal with anything, I have to go up and down my staircase to get outside! Luckily, I can put weight on my foot and walk around on it, but the cast throws me off balance, causes some back pain, and it's very tricky without being able to bend my foot at all to get up and down stairs (or chairs or floors). If I had terrific upper body strength and no weight problem, it would probably be a cinch, but no, it's just not. The point is, I need to lose weight and get and stay active, but I'm concerned about hurting myself worse and taking longer to recover. Very frustrating! By the way, I've noticed pain in the uninjured foot, I guess from all the extra stress being put on it.
Trouble is, if I let this get in my way, I may never get on with doing something really healthy and necessary.
I started a small garden early in the spring to encourage my nurturing and healthier eating habits. I have some lovely edible flowers, lettuces, tomatoes, herbs, zuchinnis, strawberries, and red peppers planted. And some cukes waiting to be planted in the yard, but have not been able to do it. I also have a mountain of sunflowers that need to be transplanted out of the garden and into the yard.
So, I'm on the right track, although everything is now a great big hassle due to the cast on my foot which prevents full range of motion, and getting up and down is truly an ordeal because of the excess weight, lack of stamina, and a lack of will, not to mention a little pain. But I've already put so much work into getting this garden started, I can't imagine letting it go to pot!
Anyone who's been through this or knows about recovering from injury and exercising safely? Thanks.

Lehaa - good for you in your decision to keep the 4-year-old away from the brainwashing. She is at too tender an age to be played with in that manner by a cult and your ex. It is entirely wrong what he's done, all around. Glad to hear you're going to use the legal system. That's best for you and the kids. Hugs to you!
Jw - I don't want to hijack Lehaa's thread here, discussing internet ettiquette; mainly because I am sure that I have been guilty of bad manners myself. But, I must take issue with the highly question "why were you disfellowshipped." Within this context, that is an extremely invasive question that appears to seek to blame the mother for a situation she now has no control over - that her husband is not meeting his responsibilities, both in the eyes of god and the state.
Disfellowshipping is a very personal discussion, and if the person choses to discuss it, they should; however, asking someone in the middle of a discussion about their divorce,"if you don't mind my asking, why were you disfellowshipped," ranks right up there with, "Why did you divorce?" It's just not something appropriate to ask, regardless of whether or not you asked if one "minds." It is a very painful, personal topic, not to be tread upon in that manner. Just so you know, jw, okay?
No offense intended, to you or anyone. Thanks for your interest in helping out here. Additionally, that question about df'ing is completely irrelevent to the topic at hand, which is that someone else is behaving badly by not supporting his own children, by harassing the ex-wife, and by being a hypocrite (in associating with the disfellowshipped), right?
It also appears to me that he and/or the JWs are messing with the kids' head, based on Lehaa's latest response, so I feel certain it is inappropriate to ask why she was DFed (or divorced), especially since she has custody now, something that would not be very likely if she was more abusive or neglectful than the father in question. -

April 21 was my birthday and only one person knew or cared (and it was not my mom or dad). It was my daughter. The delights of having a Jehovah's Witness family do not end. I broke my foot this weekend and no one in my immediate family even knows because we are so estranged by their strange religion. Sad, huh? I don't feel angry or sad, just lucky to have my daughter and to be out of that silly, lifeless cult. Happy Birthday to all who have not been wished one this lifetime! You deserve to be celebrated as children of the universe because each life is a wonder and a miracle of evolution! And just because you're you.

P.S. Lehaa - My only daughter is going to her junior prom and she's wearing a $500- dress that she absolutely fell in love with. Now that's something that goes against all my good common sense and morals, but thanks to a hefty (5 months' worth of) child support arrears payment, I was able to say "yes."
Someone, please get me some painkiller!
We're also using some of the other money from the child support to attend a convention my daughter has been obsessing over, and we've gotten a very nice hotel suite with some of her friends. These are things we've never done, but thanks to that child support, we will do this (instead of just paying for gas, groceries, and school supplies.)
I really do plan to make a portrait of my daughter in that dress and send a copy of the bill to her dad, (who's always been a total weasel about child support), and thank him for "allowing" the state of Tennessee to garnish his wages, (if he ever goes back to reporting his income), and for putting a lien on his property (or on his tax return) so our daughter could have that dress and go to her anime convention.
No way in the world I could have gotten it for her on my lousy salary! I wish you could see her in it! What a dreamy dress on a lovely girl!
Now that I'm sitting here, unemployed, with a broken foot, (happened Easter weekend), I could kick the shit out of myself, BUT, I just can't wait to rub that portrait and the bill for the dress in her weasely father's face.
After all these years of the runaround with him, it does me some good to finally spend my daughter's child support on her for something totally, ridulously extravagant - the most extravagant thing she has ever had; and it could be the most extravagant thing she ever will have again, you know!
Mostly, the child support, however sporadic it has been, has put food in our mouths, clothes on her back, and paid a few small bills over the years. Whatever you can get, you should get. -

Lehaa - If you want to punish your husband for being a jerk and a hypocrite, fine, go to the elders. BUT, if you ALSO want what is best for your children, you should seek legal remedies with lawyers and people who specialize in child support cases. As a single parent of 18 years, I cannot stress this enough. The elders will be of little if any help to you or your kids, who are probably suffering enough as the direct result of the JW's homewrecking tactics. Keep in mind that if you come across as an embittered "tattle tale" (to your ex-hubby's family and friends), or if you come across as someone with a vendetta, (which you may rightfully have!), it could backfire on you and your kids. I would try to keep the letter-writing limited to writing an attorney or child support case workers. You could end up defending yourself against defamation charges or some such nonsense if you don't use care; and that would take more away from you and from your kids. You've already suffered enough. Use the law of the land to benefit you and your kids. The fact that your ex is not paying child support should be humiliating enough, but JWs have very strange ideas about their responsibilites to us worldly ones, as you know! I hope you can use your anger productively and help yourself and your kids. I totally empathize with your situation. Please let us know if you are able to talk with some kind of legal services and/or child support case workers somewhere in your area. I think it is especially urgent to get such a court-ordered arrangement in place before he re-marries, and to stick to your guns on getting it.

I have never heard or seen the term "NGO" used in any context other than that related to UN activities or UN relationships, such as when I attended a human rights conference and a family planning conference where NGO members spoke and where UN goals were specifically addressed; so in some sense, I feel the JW interactions at such places does bring into question their true commitment to being "no part of this world."
They are not "no part" when it's convenient to their agenda, I guess. And they pretend that attending such conferences is part of their ministry, I suppose. But if the average R&F JW just started showing up at such activities and speaking out for Planned Parenthood in Timbuktu or speaking out for human rights in general, or for, let's say to protect gays and lesbians from persecution in Turkey or Saudi Arabia, they'd probably get the boot for it, or, at the very least, public reproof and/or shunning for their political activities.
And even if they were not attending NGO conferences about gays and lesbians, but rather working with groups like Amnesty International without focusing specifically and only on Jehovah's Witnesses' human rights, I think they would get counseled against it by the elders because such activities would takew away from preaching the JW doctrines and finding "new sheep." Involvement by the avg R&F in political anything is taboo, no matter what they say in the magazines about "leaving it up to conscience." Ultimately, the "conscience" is the elders of the local KH coming to your house to harass you about your lack of activity in the field service, blaming it on your "worldly" involvements, like work and school and playdates for your kids (with "worldly" kids).
What a bunch of hypocrites! -

Well, I guess that explains why you never hear about KHs suffering from arson attacks, huh? It would only benefit the society.
